Servo Motor
There are three basic types of servo motors that you can choose from. There is the AC servo motor, the DC servo motor along with the brushless servo motor. The servo motor is used in closed loop control systems when the work is the control variable. Robotics use the servo motor quite a bit, as they are extremely small but very powerful.
How Does A Servo Motor Work? This type of motor has control circuits with a variable resistor that is attached to the output shaft of the servo motor. The angle of the servo motor is monitored by the control circuitry of the variable resistor. When the shaft of the servo motor is at a correct angle, the servo motor will shut off. If by mistake the, shaft is not as correct angle, then the servo motor will continue to turn the motor until it reaches the correct angle. The output shaft of the servo motor is capable of moving between 180 and 210 degree range but can vary often depending on the manufacturer of the servo motor. Most servo motors will have a mechanical stop that is built on the main output gear. When the servo motor needs to turn a rather large distance, the motor will run as full speed. This in turns works the opposite way if it only needs to turn very little. It will run at a much slower pace. The angle of the servo motor is determined with a control wire. This communicates the angle that is applied by the duration of a pulse that is being applied the the control wire. AC servo motors often have low torque ratios for high accelerations. They are generally small but again very powerful for their size and very easy to control. Common forms of AC servo motors are induction and gearmotor types. They can either be single phase or three phase. The three phase AC servo motor is generally used for for industrial applications. Motor speed can be adjusted continuously or set at certain application speeds when you use a multi-speed AC servo motor. AC servo motors also have the capability of operating in both clockwise and counter clockwise directions. The AC servo motors are designed in either cylindrical or square shapes and they can be either open or enclosed. They are available in a wide variety of housing sizes and diameters. This type of servo motor is used a lot in special environments such as clean rooms. The DC servo motor is a high performance servo motor. They were designed to meet rugged and demanding requirements for industrial motion control. These type of servo motors are usually available with several options such as encoders, brakes, windings, etc. The types of applications that use the DC servo motors are coil winders, machine tools, robotics, factory automation, assembly equipment and many many more rugged applications. The brushless servo motor is another type of servo motor on the market today. They have no brushes or sliding contacts installed on them which gives the servo motor a much longer life. This makes for a much quieter operation and they require very little maintenance on them. The brushless servo motor has permanent magnets that are on the rotor and the windings are installed on the stator. By having the magnets on the rotor, the servo motor is able to get up to a certain speed much quicker. The servo motor can achieve higher continuous loads by having the windings on the stator and will not exceed any design temperatures.
