A variable speed ac drive is a device that is used to control the speed of an electrical motor. It can be either an induction motor or a synchronous motor. In 1899, the first electrical AC motor was designed. They were characterized by having a fixed speed that was determined by the power supply. Since a fixed speed is not applicable for all processes, the variable speed AC drive was designed to change the speed of motors.

The variable speed AC drive is used in many different types of applications. A prime example of a variable speed AC drive used would be on a fan that is providing an adjustable airflow in either heating or air conditioning systems. Variable speed AC drives are most commonly used in water and wastewater processes, tunnel boring, oil drilling platforms, mining and also paper mills.

The variable speed AC drive works by changing the frequency of the electrical supply to whatever motor you are using. There is three phase voltage in the electrical grid that is connected to the motor and this creates a rotating magnetic field. The rotor that is in the electrical motor now follows the rotating magnetic field. The variable speed AC drive will convert the frequency of the network between 0 and 300Hz and sometimes even higher. This will control the speed of the motor proportionately to the frequency.
